The Xe Namnoy dam is a 74 m high rockfill dam with earth core currently under construction on the Bolaven Plateau in southern Lao. The water level of the future seasonal reservoir will fluctuate between the minimum operation level (MOL) at EL 760 m a.s.l. and the full supply level (FSL) at EL 788.5 m a.s.l. The water from this reservoir will be conveyed by a 16 km long power tunnel to a powerhouse located at the toe of the plateau, and released to the Xe Kong River along a 6 km long tailrace channel.
A plunger or needle valve has been selected to regulate the flow depending on the reservoir water level. This type of valve is suitable for the continuous regulation of high pressure differences and flow rates.
